Guidelines for Hand Sanitizer Use in Schools

Sanitizers are NOT a replacement for washing with soap and water.  Hand washing with soap and water should still be vigorously promoted, especially after washroom use or if there is visible dirt on the hands i.e., after playing out side.

Until an approved product is available in all classrooms without sinks, the rule of not allowing students to bring their own product in continues to be relaxed.  However, the following shall be followed with respect to use and product permitted. These guidelines are to be reviewed with all staff as well as the procedures for use.

·        Products used shall be between 60 – 90% alcohol.

·        The alcohol content makes sanitizers flammable.

·        Do not use or store near open flames.

·        Over use may cause skin irritation due to the drying affect on the skin.

·        Only unscented products shall be used in schools/facilities.

·        Use of sanitizers by students shall be supervised.

o       No horseplay with sanitizer

o       No consumption of the product

o       Use is limited and controlled under supervision

o       All students shall be informed of the procedures for use * see note
