Elementary EQAO Assessment Results

Primary and Junior Assessments of
Reading, Writing and Mathematics

The Primary and Junior Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics are conducted annually by EQAO at the close of Grades 3 and 6. These assessments measure student achievement of the provincial curriculum expectations in reading, writing and mathematics at the close of the primary and junior divisions. The assessments test what students know and how well they apply their knowledge and skills in everyday situations by requiring students to read and respond to passages, to write, and to solve mathematical problems.

Student work on the assessments is evaluated according to the expectations in The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8, using a four-level assessment scale that reflects the four achievement levels in The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8.  These four levels are as follows:

Level 4 identifies achievement within the provincial curriculum that exceeds the provincial standard.

Level 3 (the provincial standard) identifies a high level of achievement of the provincial expectations.

Level 2 identifies achievement that is approaching the standard.

Level 1 identifies achievement that falls below the provincial standard.

Assessment Results

The EQAO assessment results from 2008-2009 continue to demonstrate progress for Dufferin-Peel students. Results of the most recent primary and junior assessments of reading, writing and mathematics indicate that changes in achievement among Dufferin-Peel students in the areas tested ranged from -3% to +3% over the previous assessment year. More specifically, there were gains observed in both the primary and junior EQAO assessments of mathematics in 2008-2009. Dufferin-Peel's proportion of students achieving at or above the provincial standard matched or exceeded that of Ontario in all six elementary EQAO assessments. The results indicate that at least 62% of Dufferin-Peel students achieved the provincial standard in Grades 3 and 6 reading, writing and mathematics.
