Special Education & Support Services

Each one called by name...(Isaiah 43:1)
To be nourished, to be sustained, to grow, to the fullest extent of his/her gifts and abilities

Responding to God's call, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board fosters and nourishes a safe, caring and inclusive education community rooted in tradition and scripture.  Our Catholic culture, supported through the home, parish, school community including trustees, staff and/or community associations  invites students into a deeper relationship with, and understanding of Christ.

Guided by the principles within the Ministry documents Education for All and Special Education Transformation, we recognize that "fairness is not sameness" and that each student is unique. We are committed to supporting one student at a time. Within our Catholic culture, and through personalized and precise programs and services, we promote success for all students through a cycle of continuous assessment for learning.

As supported by the Ontario Ministry of Education's Shared Solutions and in order to create a culture of collaboration, Dufferin-Peel promotes positive school climates and endeavours to establish effective lines of communication among home, parish and school community. Keeping the student at the centre, Special Education and Support Services practice is rooted in the home school community and supports students by promoting accessibility, honouring diversity and mutual respect and by demonstrating transparency and fairness.

The 2008-2010 Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board System Goals, focusing on Catholicity, Community Development, Financial Accountability and Transparency, Excellence in Student Achievement and Student Enrolment Impact provide further direction for education initiatives within a Catholic context and serve as a foundation for future planning in Special Education and Support Services.

Within the Board Plan to Improve Student Achievement (BPISA) and aligned Board Plan to Improve Student Achievement With a Focus on Special Education Plans, Dufferin-Peel provides needs-based professional development opportunities, human and resource allocation based on evidence in student learning, effective intervention and achievement, to ensure that educators, support staff, administrators, and supervisory officers are fluent in quality assessments and exemplary instructional practices for all.

The Special Education Department, special education and support staff, system leaders and educational stakeholders work as a community to support the provision of programs and services that foster independence and promote growth for all students through team planning, staff collaboration and student participation in authentic learning opportunities where "each is called by name" (Isaiah 43:1).
