GRADE NINE WELCOME NEWSLETTER
Welcome to Father Michael Goetz Catholic Secondary School! The information in this newsletter is intended to assist you with your preparation for Grade 9, and in particular the first month of school.
MISSION STATEMENT
In our Mission, we reflect our values and beliefs, our commitments, and express our role. As members of the Goetz community, we:
-
Commit ourselves to the ideals of Jesus by promoting in our students respect for all members of the school community, self-worth as persons created in the image of God, respect for learning toward the betterment of the world, moral values and conduct based on the Gospel.
-
Strive to nurture each student's spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional and social growth, with the goal of students becoming responsible and responsive adults.
-
Value the contribution of our students, parents, staff members and the community at large, and encourage all in keeping with our school motto: "Take a risk, Get involved, Be committed" (Ed King).
OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Our Catholic Secondary School exists by the virtue of its subscription to the Catholic faith and an active participation in its beliefs. In a Catholic school, all students and staff are obligated to share actively in this basic belief. It is the intent of Fr. Michael Goetz Secondary School to provide a community where Catholic values are promoted in theory and in practice.
The environment of the school will be one in which students and staff experience the benefits of living in a genuine Christian community within which love, faith and equality are practised. The basic philosophy is reinforced at a practical level through the application and administration of our Guidelines to Success and our Catholic Code of Conduct.
It recognizes and encourages the parents/guardians as the principal role models for the student and as a consequence the provider of discipline. The school will complement the parents/guardians in their role by providing all possible assistance through dialogue and discussion to ensure that together, both the parents/guardians and the school personnel will lead each student to acquire the values congruent with the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Our Code of behaviour is a reflection of the Dufferin‑Peel Catholic District School Board Code of Conduct and the expectations of our school community. Founded on the principle of self worth, it focuses on the values of self discipline and respect. The Code is a vehicle for creating a safe learning environment where courtesy and kindness prevail, and where there is respect for the difference in other people, customs and cultures. The following 'Guidelines to Success' provide students with a focus for their energies in the context of our school motto "Take a Risk, Get Involved, Be Committed”(Ed King).
SECRET OF SUCCESS
"To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one's self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - this is the Secret of Success” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
SCHOOL COUNCIL
Our Father Michael Goetz Catholic School Council functions as an advisory body to the school administration on a variety of issues including programs, services and operation of the school. Interested parents are welcome and encouraged to join our council and participate in monthly meetings that are held on Mondays in the school library / information centre. The last meeting of the current school council is scheduled for October 5, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. At that time, the last meeting of the 2008-2009 School Council will take place and a new school council will be elected. Everyone is encouraged to participate and discuss the many facets of school life at Father Michael Goetz, including school improvement, extracurricular accomplishments and challenges.
On behalf of our School Council, our Student Council and the Faculty welcome to our Father Michael Goetz Catholic Secondary School Community. We look forward to hosting a welcome barbeque for all our incoming grade nine students as part of this orientation session. Best wishes for a safe, peaceful summer.

THE FATHER MICHAEL GOETZ SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY
The Father Michael Goetz uniform is a symbol of our unity and equality, a sign of our place in the school community. It is worn to give students pride in and responsibility for their personal appearance. As well, wearing the uniform will prepare students for certain expectations in the employment market later in life.
R. J. McCarthy Limited is the official Board supplier of school and physical education uniforms. For this reason all items of the Father Michael Goetz uniform (except footwear) must be purchased from R.J. McCarthy Limited, 360 Evans Avenue, Etobicoke – (416-593-6900)

NON-UNIFORM (Civvies) DAYS
The Student Council provides a non-uniform (civvies) day approximately once per month during the school year. These dates appear in the Student Agenda Book.
The expectations of appropriate attire are still in place on non-uniform days. Appropriate and modest dress is expected – as determined by teachers and school administration (e.g. no tattered or torn jeans, no short shorts, no inappropriate slogan t-shirts, no halter tops, tube tops, bare midriffs, bare shoulders etc., or any items which do not respect the rights of others).

Students are expected to always have proper uniform and running shoes available if a planned outside class has been changed to an indoor class due to inclement weather.

· Uniforms may be purchased from R.J. McCarthy Limited.
GRADE LEVEL ASSEMBLY
The school administration will have grade level assemblies within the few weeks of the new school year. The purpose of these assemblies is to stress the importance of communication and to clarify some of the important policies / procedures in our school community.

ü The Catholic Code of Conduct
ü Student and Staff Safety
ü Health and Smoking
ü Bullying / Fighting
ü Neighbourhood Police Unit

Student’s Responsibilities
When a student is absent from school or signing out during the school day, he/she is required to:

ü Students must leave the school premises promptly at the time indicated on their sign out.
Students without an admit slip are not permitted to class and are to be redirected to the Attendance Office. If a student leaves school without signing out, the absence will be considered as a truant class.
PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) POLICY
To promote respect for the dignity of all members of our school community and to enhance student achievement and safety, the use of a PED is strictly prohibited on school premises (including portables) or during school related activities (such as retreats, field trips, sports events, etc.) during school hours.
Failure to comply with this policy may result in the confiscation of the PED and/or disciplinary action as outlined in the Catholic Code of Conduct. The school and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) assume no responsibility for the loss, recovery, repair or replacement for any PED brought onto school property.
It is the policy of the DPCDSB that PEDs are to be kept out of sight, turned off and not used within school premises or during school sanctioned events.
To prevent the loss or damage of PEDs, the school encourages students to leave their PEDs at home or in their lockers.
The DPCDSB, in acknowledgement of the potential for disruption to the instructional day and the possibilities of interference with school operations represented by the unrestricted use of PEDs, sets forth the following requirements:
Prohibited uses of PEDs may result in disciplinary actions up to and including confiscation, detention, suspension, exclusion or expulsion. Additional consequences for inappropriate use of PEDs may also include the involvement of police services.
1.1 The use of PEDs that compromises the academic integrity of the school or individuals within the school (using PEDs during exams, tests, quizzes, assignments, projects, etc.).
1.2 The use of PEDs that interferes with or disrupts the academic day or the teaching-learning
1.3 environment (using PEDs in classrooms, instructional spaces, hallways, stairwells, etc.).
1.4 The use of PEDs that violates a person's reasonable expectation of privacy (using PEDs in change rooms, washrooms, hallways, stairwells, or during a private meeting, etc.).
1.5 The use of PEDs that compromises personal and/or school safety (using PEDs to bully or harass etc./using PEDs during emergency such as an evacuation, lockdown, heightened risk situation, etc.).
1.6 The use of PEDs that facilitates the commission of a crime (using PEDs to break federal, provincial or municipal laws).
1.7 Any other use of PEDs that the Principal deems compromises or interferes with school security, personal safety, individual privacy or academic integrity.
CO-CURRICULAR AWARDS PROGRAMS
Each student is challenged to personally participate in and be committed to a particular school activity. The Co-curricular Awards Programme offers the incentive for each student to become an active member in the Fr. Michael Goetz community. In so doing, the programme provides each student with community recognition of an individual merit, talent, or accomplishment. It thus offers motivation for each student to establish goals and pursue excellence in accordance with individual ability.
At the annual Athletic Awards Night held in June, and at the Academic Awards Night held in October, students are recognized for their contributions in the various programs. At these ceremonies, we present awards to the Most Valuable Participant in Performing Artist, Athletes of the Year, Fr. Michael Goetz S. S. Spirit Award and various awards in high academic achievement.
ELIGIBILTIY - CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITES
All students who represent Fr. Michael Goetz Catholic Secondary School are expected to maintain an academic standard. Participation in any extra-curricular activity is a privilege. A student who does not fulfil their obligations to his/her academic program will automatically be placed under review.
Reasons for being placed under review:
-
A deliberate failure to attend class.
-
If at any time a student is failing or has failed 2 or more courses.
-
The administrator will undertake the review. The result of the review which will involve the student, the course teachers and the advisor/coach, may include:
-
Students can also be suspended from missing a particular class that may be adversely effected by an activity. However, teachers can not unilaterally make decisions not to excuse a student to attend a co or extra-curricular activity on the day of the activity. This must be done ahead of time in conjunction with an administrator.
