A Message to the Dufferin Peel Community Regarding Earthquake Relief for Haiti January 19, 2009
The tragedy of the earthquake in Haiti is becoming ever so more clear to us with each passing day. Our community has responded, as it always does, with great charity and compassion. To date, we have encouraged our staff and our schools to participate in fundraising activities and we have linked with ShareLife, which will forward funds raised to Caritas Internationalis, the Catholic Church's official relief agency. Caritas Internationalis is participating in the Canadian government’s program to match funds raised, which makes our donations even more impactful. Over the next few weeks, we will have a number of local events that we will be announcing to support further fundraising in our community.
This Sunday in our Churches, there will be a special collection for the Haiti relief fund and I encourage your participation.
Many of our students may not have the ability to raise funds personally because of their own financial situation. This is understandable. That is why, regardless of whether or not we are able to raise significant funds, it is just as important to view this event as a teachable moment to share with our students to illustrate that we are all part of one human family; a family loved by God
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” Matthew 25
For whatever efforts that you, your family, or your school community have made or plan to make on behalf of the Haitian people, I wish to thank you.
