There are many different citation styles available for students to use when completing research assignments.  The two which are used at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School are MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association).  It is important for students to check their instructor's preference as to which style and format for citing sources they are to use.

Students must provide the following information when completing research papers.

  • A list of the sources used in order to complete the assignment.  This list is referred to as either Works Cited, Reference List or Bibliography.
  • Identification within the text of the research paper, citing what information was derived from these sources and where within the source this information was located.  These are referred to as parenthetical references (in-text or embedded citations) or footnotes or endnotes.  Students should check with their instructor which format they are to use.
